About Melanie

I am a Registered Psychologist and Senior Scientist in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program of the Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). I’m also a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) at the University of Toronto, where I am affiliated with the Social and Behavioural Health Sciences program and the Institute for Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME).

My research program is in implementation science (IS), and I am involved in a broad range of IS research across health. I am particularly interested in the intersection of IS science and practice and in developing implementation capacity and resources.

Effective interventions that are not used optimally will fail to reap value from existing investments.

Acknowledging the Land and its People

I would like to acknowledge that much of my work occurs on the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca and, most recently, the Mississauga’s of the Credit River. Today, Toronto is home to Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. I am grateful for the opportunity to share this land and contribute to the health and well-being of its people. I recognize the unethical and non-consensual processes through which colonization occurred. I acknowledge the seen and unseen privilege from which I benefit in many areas of a colonized society. I am learning how to be an Indigenous ally.

The Implementation Roadmap

The Implementation Roadmap© (TIR) is a step-by-step planning tool for implementers in real-world practice settings. Implementation is a complex process with many moving parts. TIR simplifies the process into five main elements from implementation science to provide a practical and simple-to-follow implementation planning experience. TIR consists of a workbook and poster and is available as a hard copy and digital PDF fillable download.

Shortcomings of Evidence Dissemination

As we welcome 2022, the healthcare landscape is replete with organizations whose main purpose is to disseminate empirically supported evidence to a wide range of knowledge users. To be sure, getting evidence to the right people, at the right time, and in the right format remains an important goal, and we are still building capacity…
